Nutrition for Children: Facts and Figures you Need to Know

from: ParentingKidsToday.com

Have you ever noticed your children getting sick every now and then?

If they are, then it is important that you are aware if they are getting proper nutrition or not. Keep in mind that their nutrition plays an important role in their development for it can affect their learning abilities as well as their stamina levels which are essential in sustaining both their physical and mental growth.

Nutrition for your children is a very important factor in their development. This is the reason why you need to learn all their nutrition needs. Read on and learn about their nutritional needs as well as how to provide necessary nourishment to help them live a healthy life not only today but for the coming days and years as well.

Nutrition as Part of Growing Up

As mentioned earlier, nutrition plays an important role in the development of your children. Because their young body is in the growth stage, lack of essential minerals and vitamins in their body may result to poor growth and possible health problems later on in their lives. That is why it is important for them to eat a well-balanced diet which is composed of varieties of healthy foods. In addition, regular exercise routine must also be done in conjunction with their diet to further enhance your children's well being.

For example, the iron and calcium level requirement of a child's growing body is higher than those of adults. Calcium is responsible for the strengthening of your children's teeth and bones whereas iron is responsible for the development of their muscles and production of blood. Such essential substances can be found on different foods which you can include in your children's diet. In addition, you may also provide your children with supplements to help in your children's nutritional needs.

Nutritional Figures for your Children

If your children are now on their schooling age, they are required of around 1,600 to 2,400 calories everyday, which is dependent on their activity level and age. Since they are growing, their calorie need is also increasing which is also dependent on their age. Boys tend to be active during their schooling age, thus they need an additional 500 calories everyday, whereas girls are required to take an extra 200 calories everyday.

Furthermore, your children's fat consumption everyday should be limited to less than 30 percent of their everyday diet to prevent the occurrence of obesity and other health-related problems. This can be achieved by ensuring your children that they get variety of vegetables to be included in their everyday diet. You may use at least 2 to 4 servings of vegetables everyday, preferably legumes and salad greens. Such vegetables contain essential nutrients that play an important role in your children's development.

You also need to include in your children's everyday diet the following foods with their corresponding servings:

- Around 2 to 4 servings of fruits;
- Average of 6 to 11 servings of pasta, cereal, rice, and bread; and
- Around 2 to 3 servings of beans, nuts, and meats.

Keep in mind that your children's nutrition will dictate their development as they grow. You may use the aforementioned guidelines so you can help your children develop properly. After all, they will be thankful later on to you for providing them the nutrition that is essential during their growing years.
