Funny, Healthy and Nice: Activities to Boost Kid's Health
from: ParentingKidsToday.comIt's one of the hardest part of being a parent - making your child eat veggies, teaching them how to pee properly and use the bathroom, reminding them to brush their teeth before going to bed, making sure they wash their hands before eating. Health and hygiene are the basic lessons a child has to learn at an early age.
There's a grain of truth in the age-old saying, "Health is Wealth." As parents, you ought to know. A healthy body has a sound mind.
Oftentimes, parents fail to underscore the importance of health among their kids. Today's children prefer chips and fast food over home-cooked meals, a sedentary afternoon playing video games over a game of basketball or a run in the park, comic books over their school books.
So, how do you get your kids to become conscious of their health and bodies? The best way to do it is to engage them in interactive, fun-filled health activities.
Sports. Choose from basketball, soccer, badminton, volleyball, skating, swimming. Not only does it builds and tones the muscles, it also builds up your kid's emotional and social skills. Engaging your kids in sport activities can develop into a hobby and a good way to pass the time, instead of staying at home playing video games. There's also martial arts and dancing if your kids are more of the creative type.
Online Games. They love computers and computer games. So make use of these online games to teach your kids the basics of health and hygiene. Sites like www.colgate.com or www.kidshealth.org offer a variety of online games for your kids to play. There are games that teach kids the value of brushing their teeth. Others use these online games to teach and test kids about the different systems of the body. Some games promote proper nutrition and the food pyramid. These online games are created for kids of varied ages and are interactive as they could get.
Trips and tours. Bring your kids to the dentist for a check-up. This will show them the importance of brushing their teeth and making sure that that they floss. Bring them to the grocery and teach them how to read the labels. This would teach them about proper nutrition.
Make it part of your lifestyle and make it fun! Most kids do not want to be repeatedly told to brush their teeth. They also do not want to listen to lectures about hygiene and body cleanliness. So, the simplest way to engage them is to make these habits a part of their play. Teach them the parts of the body through guessing games. Race with them to the bathroom when they brush their teeth. Play "pass the message" to teach them the importance of cleaning their ears. Bake cookies or home-made pizzas with them instead of munching on chips or fast food during movie time. These would make your kids appreciate their health and their bodies more if they find it as something that's fun and enjoyable.
Brushing their teeth need not be a major headache. Dirty hands need not be a nightmare. Kids just need to learn to appreciate the value of health and a good body. With a dash of creativity, we can teach them to be healthy and clean the fun and entertaining way.
