Ill Treatment of Children
from: ParentingKidsToday.comDue to our economic slump, most of the nation's attention is focused on law makers, Wall Street and job reports, which means that one of the hardest hit demographics is being overlooked, and that is our children. Across the nation there has been an increase in the number of children who are being abused because of domestic violence and school counselors tell us that they are seeing an increase in the number of mental health issues developing in their students.
Many experts now feel that there is a definite problem and the problem will get worse the more the economic condition worsens. In Colorado alone there were over 41,000 cases of abuse or child maltreatment in 2008, up from approximately 30,000 in 2007 and 20,000 in 2006, making it one of the worst years ever.
While there may be no quantifiable proof that links the disturbing trend of children being abused to the tough economic times, historically, the number of child abuse cases has increase during difficult economic periods. The prevention of child abuse has typically been harder to enforce during those times. Many believe the increase is related to job losses and the associated anxiety and anger that builds up in the abusers.
There are other aspects of concern for both adults and children. Statistics show that 84% of the kids who were polled indicated they were worried about the economic crisis having a negative impact on their own family's financial stability. Experts tell us that this type of instability usually results in an increase in the number of children being subjected to abuse. Naturally, the only time that you want to see a child's name in the headlines is when it is a happy, feel good story but unfortunately that is not always the case, as they usually show up only when the damage has been done, and the efforts to prevent child abuse have failed and it is too late to save them.
