Child Abuse Prevention

from: ParentingKidsToday.com

One fact that many people find strange is that the number of reported child abuse cases drops quite a bit during the summer months. Experts tell us that this is because teachers and other childcare professionals don't see our children everyday during this time. However, during the school year they are mandated to file a report and look for any indicators of abuse. Yet it is everyone's responsibility, not just teachers and professionals, to aid in child abuse prevention. Many children are taught about "stranger danger" but in reality those cases of abuse are actually pretty rare, as most sexual abuse cases against children are committed by family members or close family friends.

In the history of the world only one strategy has worked to overcome a public health problem and that is to focus on the cause. Is child abuse and molestation a public health problem? Child protection services experts say yes, as it qualifies on two counts: number of victims and damage to health. Abusing a child obviously endangers a child's emotional and physical health. Most unfortunately, the number of children victimized is in the millions.

One plan for child abuse prevention is to do what health professionals have done and that is to find the cause and then come up with something to stop it. Statistics state that 95% of abusive acts committed are due to an ongoing misguided drive directed at kids, so if we could stop the older children from developing that drive or disorder it would drastically reduce the amount of victims. It has been said that even the simple act of talking about this problem openly with older children is a great step forward in the prevention of child abuse.

Telling others about the facts is considered very important. Once medical professionals know what causes a disease or disorder, the next step in getting rid of the problem is by getting the word out in health news; providing the necessary information to help stop the problem.

Child abuse prevention is extremely difficult as it demands that everyone talk about these exploited children to friends and family. This can be difficult as many do not want to hear about how "close to home" this situation can be and talking about the facts forces them to face the issue. However, increasing public awareness about the facts is a big step toward an abuse free environment.
